Set in Bedfordshire, Ish follows two best friends at the tail end of childhood, forced to enter adolescence when racial profiling, followed by a traumatic police stop-and-search, tears the two apart. Ish faces the reality of how young brown boys are treated in the UK, and must learn how to navigate a world of constant surveillance.
Featuring a lavish black-and-white presentation, the stark visuals complement the gritty drama as we follow a young boy’s battle with personal trauma and the realities of growing up in small-town England as a minority.
This film is part of our newest strand, Stories of Home, in partnership with the BFI. Stories of Home will showcase films that explore the medium’s potential to bring communities together and to create a welcoming and inclusive space that encourages connection with others.
