Cactus Pears
Anand returns home to his ancestral village, to observe the ten-day mourning ritual following his father’s death. As he wades through the all too familiar pressures of family expectations and marriage, he finds unexpected solace in a rekindled friendship with Balya, a childhood friend facing similar pressures.
Over the course of the mourning period, their bond deepens into a tender and intimate relationship, creating a quiet exploration of grief, identity and queer love within a traditional rural community.
Winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2025, this is the debut feature from director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, and offers a deeply personal story of finding solace in a culture that doesn’t accept your truth.
We will also be screening the BAFTA winning animated short, Two Black Boys in Paradise, before Cactus Pears. The short follows two black boys who fall in love, based on the poem by Dean Atta, exploring queer and black love on screen. Alongside its poetic story of self love and acceptance, director Baz Sells explores how important it is to show stories of queer love through a joyous and loving lens.

How do I get there?
By car: Please follow the parking instructions in 'Where do I park'. By train: Once you have exited the main entrance at Swindon Station, turn right and keep walking straight onwards to London Street, for approx 5 minutes, past the Workshed. Create Studios is on your right.
Where do I park?
The closest parking is in Bristol Street Car Park (6 Bristol St, Swindon SN1 5EQ). Please note this is a pay to park and does form into a bus lane by the Mechanics Institute. Once you have parked, walk back down the entrance ramp and turn left onto London Street, or enter through the back.
Is there disabled access?
Yes, we have an accessible lift for anyone to use - the entrance door on London Street is also ground level. If you have any other accessibility needs please feel free to get in touch with us!
Is this a photographed event?
There may be photography for community and outreach purposes. If you would not like to be photographed please inform one of the team upon your arrival.
