Why do people want to have their portraits painted? What do portraits tell us about the sitters that they depict? How has portraiture changed throughout British history?
This exhibition seeks to explore these questions through a selection of portrait paintings from across the collections at Swindon Museums. From formal portraits of the Stuart period to individualistic approaches in the 20th century, we look at stories bound up with class, status and gender.
